Aftercare

Looking after your tattoo properly is the best way to ensure it heals beautifully. Your artist may give you slightly different instructions depending on your tattoo and placement, so always follow their advice if it differs from the guidance below.

Your artist will cover your tattoo with a medical-grade adhesive dressing (Second Skin) to protect it during the early stages of healing.

Your dressing

  • Leave the dressing on for three to four days, or as advised by your artist.

  • Remove it slowly under warm running water, peeling it away from your body rather than upwards.

  • Wash the tattoo gently using warm water, unscented soap, and clean hands.

  • Pat the area dry with a clean towel or kitchen roll. Avoid rubbing.

Second Skin

After removing the dressing, apply a thin layer of unscented moisturiser — such as Aveeno, cocoa butter, or a tattoo-specific balm — two to three times a day for around two to three weeks.

If your artist recommends dry healing, don’t apply any creams. Simply keep the tattoo clean and dry.

Moisturising

While your tattoo heals

  • Direct sun exposure and sunbeds

  • Fragranced creams, serums, and oils

  • Swimming pools, hot tubs, and open water

  • Tight clothing that rubs against the tattoo

  • Activities and exercise that cause excessive sweating or friction around the tattoo

  • Scratching, rubbing, or picking at the tattoo

You can shower as normal, but avoid soaking the tattoo in water. Wash it gently once or twice a day.

Avoid

Tattoos naturally soften over time, but regular moisturising and SPF 30+ whenever your tattoo is exposed to the sun will help keep it looking its best for years to come.

Long-term care

If something doesn’t feel right

Some redness, tenderness, and mild swelling can be completely normal during the first few days.

If you notice excessive swelling, increasing pain, unusual heat, or yellow or green discharge, seek advice from your GP or contact us.
